Wellness Walking/Photography project

Every Friday - 1 - 3pm Wellness Walks with Roger

Check our facebook page - thelearningcommunity for weekly details of meeting place and times

As last year's Walking/Photography project was so successful we have secured further Funding from The NHS/Bassetlaw Green and Blue Social Prescribing funds to help those socially and digitally isolated within our communities, improve mental well-being, create new friendships and interests as well as learning new skills and visiting beautiful locations in the Rotherham Borough.

Last year we visited beautiful places such as:

  • Wentworth Woodhouse

  • Clifton Park

  • Manvers Lake

  • Rotherham Town Centre

  • Greasbrough Dam

  • Thrybergh Country Park

The walks will be based in different areas of Rotherham to provide opportunities for different people to come along and they will be planned in districts of interest. Roger Cheetham (Our Walk Lead)  will provide a mapped-out walk and participants will look at different locations along the way for photo opportunities. We will be stopping off at local cafes for a drink halfway through the walk.  I have a small budget towards drinks and refreshments to enjoy halfway.

Then the following week we will be having an assessment and editing session using different methods and apps, again in a venue of agreement to remove barriers to inclusion.

In a classroom setting the images will be produced using people's own devices, though we do have a number of tablets for use for those who don’t have equipment. Therefore we encourage participants to bring a range of different image-making equipment, cameras, tablets and no doubt, phones if they have equipment. We will talk about different aspects of photography and how to improve our work and make it look more interesting for ourselves and to others. This will include depth of field, composition, and using parts of the environment as available to make our work more interesting.

All aspects will be saved securely for those using our equipment on electronic devices.

The sessions will be relaxed and will, hopefully, provide a little fun and enjoyment too. There will be no pressure and emphasis will be on each individual to create their own work, their own version of the 'story', so to speak. We plan to have a social media platform (Whatsapp group) too for people to communicate and share positive experiences.

This is a 40 week course available to anyone over the age of 18 and you are welcome to attend any session -  you do not have to attend all 40 sessions and can, if preferred just attend the walks or photography sessions if unable to accommodate both.

For those attending the photography sessions a winning photograph will be chosen and the winner will be presented with an award and prize of a camera worth 150.00.  All other participants will receive a certificate of attendance detailing topics of photography delivered.
